A full bread that had been hollowed out was the star of this dish, which also included crudités to dip in.  

Some New Englanders liked their pumpernickel with crab, clams, or shrimp inside, while others liked spinach and artichoke. 

The 1980s were a watershed moment for pizza toppings, which had previously mostly included pepperoni, sausage, onion, and peppers.
